Manju Ganeriwala, an expatriate Marwari originally from Jhunjhunu in Rajasthan, has been serving as the Treasurer in the Virginia government since 2009. Known to run a tight ship, Ganeriwala has helped make Virginia one of America’s most financially well-managed states. MARWAR talks to the woman who embodies the enterprising spirit and the adaptability of pravasi Marwaris.

Text: Niyati Patel

Her story may start like many others—a young Marwari woman marries and immigrates to America—but Manju Ganeriwala’s life has taken an inspiring turn. A young Marwari from Mumbai, she battled early marriage and her family’s conservative mindset to become the Treasurer of Virginia, USA. Today, she handles a budget of over $9 billion in public funds and over $15 billion in debt, and manages the insurance of bonds and banking services. She is also the Chairperson of the Treasury board and a member of several other boards such as the Virginia College Savings Plan and the Virginia Housing Development Authority.

After working for the East Ohio Gas Company in Cleveland, Ganeriwala moved to Richmond, the capital of Virginia in 1983 and joined the biggest employer in the state, the government. A remarkable woman and recipient of the ‘Outstanding Women Award (Government)’ in 2009, Ganeriwala shares her early experiences of living in India and America, of working in the Virginian government and of being Marwari in USA.
